How to Transition Your Home From Summer to Fall Without the Clutter
Seasonal changes are the perfect opportunity to reset your home, declutter what is no longer serving you, and prepare for a busier season ahead. But where to start? Look no further! Below we tackle the biggest organizing questions during a season swap so you can have a peaceful and cozy entry to fall.
What to do with all my summer clothing? → Closet Season Swap
Drowning in dresses and flowy skirts with nowhere to store your favorite sweaters? Time for a season swap! First do a big edit of everything summer-specific: how often did you wear each item? On a scale from 1-10, how did you feel wearing it? If either of those numbers were below 3, it might be time to donate. Once you have a narrowed down selection, take a look at your secondary storage options. This could be your basement, garage, guest room, under bed storage, or even a shelf on the top of your closet. Find a place that suits your space for storing off-season items. This will be where you can store seasonal dresses, skirts, cami’s, shorts, bathing suits, sandals, open toed shoes, and any other summer-specific items. If you’re storing in your basement or garage, use weathertight bins to keep everything fresh for next year, slim hangers and bins for guest rooms, long lidded bins for underbed, and decorative bins for your top closet shelf. These can all be labeled “Seasonal Clothing” and tucked away so you have space for sweaters, long-sleeve dresses, scarves, and boots.
What if I don’t have room for fall/winter accessories? → Front Closet Season Swap
If you store your accessories in a front closet instead of your clothing closet, time to season swap this space too! Bins or drawers that previously held space for any spring/summer activities and accessories can be swapped using the same method as above. Make sure to go through and edit your items before storing, place fall/winter accessories like scarves and gloves in bins or drawers of your front closet, and heavier jackets and coats onto hangers. Similarly, open-toed shoes and sandals can be edited and placed into storage bins to create space for boots, booties, and close-toed shoes on your shoe rack.
How do I make my home feel cozy for fall without adding clutter? → Decor Debrief
The age old question: how do I add variety without burdening my space with too much stuff? Time for a decor debrief: any decor or textiles that are summer-specific can be placed neatly into a weathertight bin to be stored in your basement, closet, or other storage area. This bin can be labeled “Seasonal Decor” so you can use it to swap between seasons as you see fit! This will give you space to layer on heavier textures, introduce warmer colors, and atmospheric lighting such as candles into your living space. This should shift the energy from bright, light, and sunny to warm and cozy.
TIP: Don’t underestimate the power of a spacial reset! Consider scooting your furniture around to create a cozy nook or two for you to nest as the weather gets cooler.
