Horderly was called in to unpack and organize this client’s new studio apartment. In smaller apartments, it’s super important to maximize every inch of space, so that the apartment feels light, bright, and clutter-free!

Before

This new apartment already had The Container Store’s ELFA system already installed – which is something we noticed right away! It set the project off to a great start because we knew we could easily add, adjust and make changes to this closet layout. It’s super easy to customize or change existing ELFA systems.

Client Goals

The closet space in the apartment was not functional for what the client needed, so Horderly was tasked with reconfiguring the current system and choosing products to make the space work for the client’s everyday needs.

The client had lots of smaller clothing items like tank tops and crop tops that store much better file-folded in a drawer. The client only had a small dresser with shallow drawers, so we knew we needed to add additional drawer space in the closet.

Since this project was an unpack, the first step in the organizing process was to get all the boxes in their proper area, pull all items out of the boxes, break the boxes down and get them out of the space.

Once the boxes were emptied and the items were sorted into piles by category, we edited through the items with our client before strategizing placement for everything. Horderly professional organizers are trained to ask clients specific questions, to help them determine which items they need, which items they love, or which items they can let go of.

After decluttering, we started strategizing placement in the master closet and in the dresser. We loosely placed clothes in drawers to figure out the most functional system in terms of what the client needed contained in specific areas.

First, we added additional ELFA shelving and seven ELFA drawers to take this closet to its full potential, based on the client’s belongings.

We used a few key products to enhance the functionality of this client’s space.

Slim Velvet Hangers – Slim velvet hangers are great because they keep the piece of clothing on the hanger, and allow for much more hanging space because of its slim design. The metal hook allows for easy sliding along the hanging rod, too!

Rod dividers – Rod Dividers are great so you can easily separate different categories of clothing! This also helps you know exactly where each piece of clothing lives, and makes it super easy to put away clothing on laundry day!

Bin Clip Labels – Bins are great because containment is so crucial on shelving! This client had a lot of clothes that were better off folded vs. hung, so we used bins to maximize shelf space, so the client could pull the bin out and put it back easily on the shelf.

Over-the-Door Shoe Organizer – By moving your shoes off the floor or shelf and onto the previously unused space on a door, you free up more room in your closet. This over-the-door shoe organizer is great for storing shoes!

A huge final step is to label each and every bin, basket, drawer etc. to make sure that the client knows where everything is! Labeling also helps clients maintain their organized space once we leave.

Once the unpack job is finished, Horderly’s final step is to walk the client through the new setup! During the final walkthrough, we teach the client about what we put into place, and why. We also teach them how to file-fold and other strategies to maintain their organized space once we leave.
