The kitchen is the heart of the home, so it’s important to make sure it’s a beautiful, functional space that all members of your family can enjoy!

Here are some tips and tricks to organizing your kitchen, so that every meal, hangout, or holiday is stress-free:

Pull Out & Sort

The first step in creating an organized kitchen is to pull out all items from cabinets, drawers, and pantries. As you pull each item out, sort items into piles by type. Keep “likes with likes” when creating piles!

Edit & Categorize

Once sorted, work pile-by-pile to edit each item – decide what to keep, toss, or donate. Keep an eye out for expired foods or duplicate kitchen tools!

Once the editing process is complete, categorize the items based on what you’re using often, and what you’re using less often.

Strategize Placement

Once you determine which items you’re keeping and which items you need to access regularly, place your most frequently-used items in the most easily accessible areas of your kitchen. At Horderly, we call those areas “prime real estate.”

Prime real estate is most commonly top drawers, shelves within easy reach, or any other easily accessible areas that you can access without using a step stool or crouching down super low.

Prime real estate should be occupied by cups and dishes that you use daily, kitchen tools you reach for often, and foods you’re grabbing or cooking with regularly.

Items you use less often, or just on holidays, should be placed on higher shelves or down-low – or perhaps in a different storage space in your home like the basement or pantry.

Implement Products

Here are some of Horderly’s favorite products to use in kitchens. These products help improve functionality and help you maintain your newly-organized space:

Expanding Shelves – Expanding shelves are great for breaking up different-sized plates or bowls! Place one half of the pile under the shelf, and the other half on top! You can use these for cups or mugs, too!

Lazy Susans – Lazy Susans are great for cabinets or shelves so you don’t have to dig through rows of bottles or spices to find the right one. Simply, spin and grab! We love using two-tiered lazy susans for spices, single-tiered lazy susans for oils and vinegar, sauces or dressings! We also love using divided lazy susans to separate snacks or condiments.

Clear Bins – Clear bins are so great to use on shelves or in cabinets because they act as drawers and always keep shelves contained, neat and tidy. Clear bins also allow you to easily see what’s inside each bin – which makes taking inventory easier before a grocery shopping trip. Place clear bins on shelves to corral and contain different categories of food, supplements, or to separate your baby supplies from the rest of your kitchen items.

Spice Organization – A lazy susan isn’t the only solution to organizing spices! Depending on your kitchen layout and available space, you can create a spice drawer using a spice roll or use a spice rack! If you want your spices to be Instagram-worthy, decant your spices into matching bottles and label accordingly!

Adhesive Bins – We love using adhesive bins under the kitchen sink to contain kitchen cleaning items like dishwasher pods, sponges or trash bags.

Drawer Organizers & Dividers – Drawer organizers and dividers allow you to corral and section off different categories of kitchen tools, utensils or accessories in kitchen drawers. These are great because they keep items from rolling around everywhere, allowing you to have a proper landing place for every single utensil or tool in your drawers.
