How to Flip Your Spare Room into A Nursery
If you have a baby on the way, first off, congratulations! We know that preparing for a baby can be overwhelming, but your friends at Horderly have you covered! We’ve helped countless moms prep for baby and transform their spaces into the perfect nursery for their bundle of joy.
Here are some helpful tips and tricks to turn your guest room or home office into baby’s new space:
Declutter
The first step in transforming your space into baby’s new room is to declutter the existing items!
First, pull out all items from closets, cabinets, drawers – everything! Sort the items into piles by category and work pile-by-pile to decide what to keep, toss or donate.
Relocate
Once you know which items from your spare room are being kept, it’s time to find other spaces around the house to store them.
If you have items that you’re grabbing regularly, consider putting them in a public or high-traffic area of the home that is easily accessible for you. If storage space is lacking, consider getting new furniture with built-in storage, implement storage shelving on walls, or use the back of doors to implement new storage solutions.
One Horderly’s goals while setting up baby’s room is to try to keep baby’s room only baby’s room – try to relocate other items to different areas of your home that make sense. This ensures that baby’s room is strictly for baby and you’ll never need to sneak into baby’s room for backstock while he or she is sleeping. For the items that don’t belong in baby’s room, or that you’re not accessing often but need to keep, consider placing them up-high in closets, the basement or garage.
Create A Registry & Purchase Necessities
Once your spare room has been decluttered and emptied, it’s time to figure out exactly what you’ll need for the baby, and what furniture will best fit in your space.
After taking inventory, decide which items will be put on your registry, and which items you’ve decided to purchase yourself, and set up furniture early in anticipation for baby’s arrival.
Planning for baby is a great time to bring in a professional organizer to help you decide what functional furniture to purchase, or to help you create a functional layout in baby’s room. Your professional organizer can help and advise on best places to place everything – so that taking care of baby is a breeze.
Your professional organizer will also ask you questions to help you decide which items you need to purchase and prep for as soon as possible, and which items can be put on your registry as gifts. It’s always important to be prepared a few weeks in advance – just in case baby comes early!
Set-Up
If you’re having a baby shower, schedule the final setup of the nursery for after the event so that you can strategize proper placement for the baby gifts you’ve received.
Make sure to wash baby’s clothes before putting them into drawers. Depending on the size of your dresser or how many months’ worth of clothes you’ve bought for baby, you could consider putting the larger sizes into a bin in the closet. Transition out the smaller clothes with the larger clothes into the dresser once baby is big enough to fit in them!
We love recommending changing tables with a dresser underneath so you can utilize the top row of drawers for any cleaning supplies or accessories you’ll need while the baby is on the changing table.
We totally understand that preparing for a baby can be overwhelming and stressful, but Horderly is here to help!
