Happy National Give Something Away Day!

National Give Something Away Day encourages people to give freely to others without expecting anything in return. This is also a good way to declutter and pass things on that no longer fit your lifestyle, or are no longer useful to you.

Although giving is a selfless act, the reward goes both ways! You benefit from feeling good about giving and making someone’s day, and at the same time, you also let go of items that you no longer need and are just lying around.

Giving and decluttering helps clear your mind and home of distractions, allowing you to fill your space with functional items you love – so that your everyday routine is clutter-free and easier to navigate.

How to Declutter

National Give Something Away Day is the perfect time to evaluate your space and declutter!

The first step in decluttering is to choose a room to start with. Horderly recommends starting in the room you find yourself in most often. For many families, this area is the kitchen or primary bedroom.

Once you choose a space to declutter, take all items out of cabinets, drawers, closets etc. and separate items into categories by type.

Then, work pile-by-pile to edit through items, or decide what to keep, toss or donate.

Once you’ve edited through your belongings and have decided what to donate, the next step is to drop everything off at a donation center or schedule a pickup!

Here are some of Horderly’s favorite national donation partners:

  • Goodwill
  • Big Brother Big Sister
  • Salvation Army
  • Dress for Success

Many of these donation centers offer same-day drop-off services, as well as scheduling services for pickup at your home.

If you need some extra help but aren’t sure where to start, reach out to Horderly to schedule a consultation for in-home or virtual organizing.
