5 Easy Ways to be Sustainable at Home
Over consumerism can be exhausting, and we’ve been craving a sustainability check in. One of our core values at Horderly has always been to encourage maintaining what you already own rather than constantly buying new. In celebration of Earth Day, we’ve compiled a list of five ways you can organize sustainably.
Sharpen Your Knives
Did you know that dull knives can actually be dangerous? Because they lack the sharpness required for precise cuts, using dull knives can increase your risk of accidentally cutting yourself. Experts recommend using a knife sharpener or a whetstone to sharpen your knives every 1-2 months. This will reduce frustration and increase your precision in the kitchen!
Sustainable Canisters
Instead of purchasing plastic canisters, try repurposing something you already have! Take those old pasta sauce jars and transform them into beautiful canisters to decant your pantry staples. Remove the old labels using either WD-40 or by soaking them in warm soapy water. We used these acacia wooden lids to take these jars to the next level.
Take Care of Your Bathroom Essentials
When was the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes? Instead of repurchasing, set aside 10 minutes to give them a thorough clean. Instead of purchasing makeup brush cleaners, we love using the olive oil and dawn dish soap method to ensure that the bristles stay hydrated while getting out all of the bacteria and left over makeup. Use equal parts dawn & olive oil on a plate, swirl your brush around, and then rinse until the water runs clear and all suds are gone! You can use the palm of your hand to get off all the dirt and makeup as you run the bristles under water.
Hair brushes can house all sorts of oil, sebum, and build up which just goes back into your hair every time you brush! Instead of replacing your hair brushes, try giving them a deep clean by soaking them in warm water with apple cider vinegar and a bit of clarifying shampoo before giving them a good scrub.
Proper Storage
We always say that proper storage will lengthen the life of your items. We recommend using sustainable containment to maintain the longevity of the items you use and love! Instead of piling your shoes on top of each other, use a wooden shoe shelf to create space between stacks. Keep categories tidy on shelves using sustainable wooden bins or eco felt bins made with sustainably sourced PRET felt! Drawer dividers are great for creating separation in drawers and ensuring items don’t crash together preventing damage. We love using bamboo dividers because they are sturdy and made from sustainable material
Mattress Maintenance
Taking care of your mattress can significantly extend its lifespan. Flip your mattress every 6-12 months to maintain its shape. For monthly maintenance, we recommend sprinkling your mattress with baking soda and allowing it to sit before vacuuming it up. The baking soda will eliminate odors and the vacuum will suck up dust mites, hair, and other critters that love to burrow in your mattress. And don’t forget to give your pillows a good wash too!
If your mattress is stained, use this amazing hydrogen peroxide hack to get rid of any and all stains.
