Secrets to a Tidy Playroom that Actually Stays Organized

Tired of stepping on rouge legos? You’re in luck! In this blog we’re sharing super simple playroom storage solutions that will maximize your space, minimize cleanup time, and inspire your kids’ creativity!

Start a Toy Rotation

Don’t underestimate the power of giving your child’s toys new life through toy rotation! Studies have shown that children play more creatively when given less toys at a time. On top of that, implementing a toy rotation will reduce clutter (& overwhelm!), deepen engagement, support skill development, promote independent choice-making, and save you money because even “old” toys feel brand new. The best part? You don’t need to have a huge surplus of space to make this happen! Add a few bins to the top shelf of their closet to store out-of-rotation toys, and alternate which toys they have access to weekly or biweekly for kiddos 1-3 years old, and monthly for kids 4 & up.

TIP: Have a garage, basement, or storage area in your home? Try using a shelving unit and weatherproof totes to store out-of-rotation toys.

Cube Cubby System

Adored by many, the cube cubby system is a great way to maximize your toy storage. This versatile solution is great for storing lots of little toys like characters, magnatiles, and legos as well as categories like pretend play and music making. You can even leave a couple cubbies open for book storage. Bonus: the cubes come in many fun colors, animal designs, clear, and even fabric, wooden, woven, and neutral options for a more sophisticated look.

TIP: Label the inside lip of each cubby instead of using bin clip labels that kids tend to pull off.

Play Parking Garage

Did someone say custom play-parking garage? We always have clients ask what the best way is to store XL trucks, carriages, scooters, and cars, so we created a cleanup solution that involves your kids’ imaginary world. Store XL toys in neat rows when not in use to create a custom play-parking garage! You can even grab a roll of frog tape or painters tape to really seal the deal. We usually tuck these on closet floors, which also helps those open spaces from becoming dumping grounds for miscellaneous items.

Storage Bench

The Poppin storage bench is the best storage hack  for organizing larger categories of toys like stuffed animals, costumes, big blocks, medium cars and trucks, and more. Bonus: you have an additional cushioned seat that doubles as secret storage. Create the perfect perch by making a window seat nook, a seating spot at the edge of their bed, or simply against a wall for some added cushion and storage.

Stackable Drawers

Stackable drawers are a dream for sorting lots of smaller categories. We  use these to organize doll accessories, color-sort legos, store art supplies, and more. They come in a variety of sizes (small, medium, large, & more!), and colors that can be tailored to your style and organizing needs.

Divided Bins

Adjustable divided bins add so much flexibility to your storage solutions. Have a category that’s always in flux? Use the adjustable dividers in these bins to transform your bin in seconds to fit your needs. We use bins to store anything from learning toys and art supplies to dolls and accessories. They also come in extra long sizes to maximize those deep shelves and cubbies.

Book Storage

Book storage for kids is simpler than you’d think! We always recommend sorting books by color to make looking for their favorite book feel as exciting as the stories within. This also makes it easy to involve your kids in cleanup from a young age. Make sure to keep sets together, and if you’d prefer, sort books first by category and then by color for avid readers.
