Organizing the garage can feel overwhelming to take on! The garage is a common pain point for our clients because it is a large space that can easily turn into a dumping ground of items people don’t want to deal with or no longer want in their living space. But with a proper strategy and system in place, garages can be amazing spaces to store tools, utility items, outdoor gear, toys, and more! At Horderly, we design garages that will last the test of time and transform your dumping ground into functional storage space! Checkout 5 of our favorite garage organizing systems below!

Slat Walls & Utility Tracks

A common garage pain point for our clients is the lack of floor space to park their car, usually due to an abundance of unused items and a lack of a proper system. Slat walls take your garage to the next level by utilizing the fullness of your wall for storage, allowing you space to park your vehicle! These are great for maximizing the height of your walls to store toys, balls, helmets, and more in baskets that easily click into place. A variety of hooks can be used on slat walls to store bikes, outdoor gear, and sports equipment. Overall, slat walls provide a clean aesthetic, come in a variety of colors, and create incredibly flexible storage.

For a more affordable option, consider utilizing at least one garage wall for utility tracks to hang slim items like yard tools or beach chairs against the wall so that you have space to park a vehicle. These are also great around the garage door to create slim storage while working around the door opening. They come with a variety of attachments such as this newly designed Garage+ Mesh Storage Bag that is great for holding balls or taller items like bats, golf clubs or pool noodles. It offers a velcro front where you can easily access what’s at the bottom.

Open Shelving

Garage shelves are ideal for organizing larger items. These shelves are incredibly easy to adjust and can be customized to your space! We store oversized items like sleds, buckets, coolers and oversized holiday decor on shelving units. Maximize height by storing infrequently accessed items up high! These weathertight totes are the only weathertight totes we use. They are great for storing items that you want to keep safe from any bugs or debris and come in a variety of sizes to play around with. Clear is a great option if you want to quickly see what all is inside the bin. These Like it Deep Fluted stacking storage totes are a great opaque option of storing items away. We love that these come in a variety of colors so that you can color code categories like holiday decor. Typically we do not recommend stacking bins because it adds an additional step when reaching for your items, but these Quantum Stackable Clear Utility Bins have open fronts which creates easy access to the items inside!

TIP: Labeling is crucial, especially in a shared space like a garage. We love using large, 1 inch label tape to label larger bins along with labeling surfaces with matching label tape like white writing on black tape for the dark gray drawers

Closed Cabinets

The Garage+ Tall Cabinet is a closed storage solution if you’re aiming to reduce visual clutter. This is a great option for people who have a lot of close neighbors walking by or if the garage door is opened frequently. Use opaque or clear bins to organize within the cabinets and store anything from holiday items to sports equipment. The Garage+ freestanding Lower Cabinets are ideal for larger/heavier items that you want to store away like a table saw or gardening soil. The Garage+ Wall-Mounted Upper Cabinets can store additional tool & utility items in open front bins for easy grab access.

Drawers

Drawers are the perfect solution for easy accessibility. The Elfa Garage+ soft close drawers are a great system for kids to easily access their outdoor toys and gear. Categories like chalk, bubbles, corn hole bags, bowling, water toys, snow toys, and skates will fit neatly in these drawers. Husky drawers are a better option for storing grab and go tools of a variety of sizes. This system comes with a work surface and wheels making them easy to move depending on where you need a work bench.

Pegboards

Pegboards are perfect for maximizing the wall space above your garage work area. They can store small tool & utility items in a variety of pegboard organizers, shelves, and hooks for easiest visibility and accessibility. They can even be used for grab & go categories like pet leashes and baggies!

By creating clear zones and easy accessibility, it’s seamless to find what you need when you need it. Want to organize your garage but need some extra help?
