An organized day can make all the difference. When you have a plan, you’re less stressed, and the obstacles ahead of you are easier to tackle.

How do you ensure that your day will go smoothly? At Horderly, we have some of the most organized people in the world on our staff – here are some Horderly Habits our professional organizers swear by.

Make a Game Plan

Spend a few minutes in the morning planning your day. What are your priorities and goals that you would like to achieve in the next 24 hours? What are your dream scenarios? Chunk it out, plan your day hour-by-hour, or make an overall to-do list, and check off your completed tasks as you go. Writing tasks down helps clear your mind and keep your energy focused on your priorities.

Declutter Your Mind

Our homes are not the only place that can get cluttered! With the constant stream of technology, media, and induced-anxiety, our minds can often be cluttered, too.

A stressed person is oftentimes a less efficient person, so try to destress as much as possible. Sometimes that’s easier said than done, but try to take a few minutes each day to meditate, or simply focus on your breathing. Remind yourself (and allow yourself) to take a step back, digitally detox for a little while, and commit to putting your phone or laptop down for at least 30 minutes each day.

The more you create space in your mind, the more creativity and productivity will flow!

Purge Clutter on a Daily Basis

Try out the “one in, one out” rule, which is a pretty simple way to reduce household clutter and prevent mindless shopping. Here’s how you do it: every time a new item enters your home, get rid of another item (it’s best if it’s something similar to the new item). For example, if you buy a new dress, donate an old one.

The one in, one out rule can be applied to any category of belongings, even mail. When you get a new piece of mail, recycle that old magazine you got last week, or pay that bill you haven’t dealt with yet.

Tackle the Hardest Tasks First

You know that task on your to-do list that overwhelms you, so you just keep putting it off, forever, and ever, and ever? Try doing it first thing in the morning, and get it out of the way! You will feel so much better once you can cross that off your list of things-to-do!

As Mark Twain once said, Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” After you “eat your morning frog,” you will feel unstoppable as you tackle the rest of the day.

Remove Distractions

Focus on one task at a time if you can, and remove any superfluous distractions. How can you fully complete a project while you’re receiving 15 texts from Aunt Nancy about her cat, or seven junk emails about a daily horoscope?

Avoid checking your phone first thing when you wake up, and put your phone on “do not disturb” when you need to focus or during bedtime – watch how much your sleep improves when you are fully focused and rested!
