Tired of organizing and reorganizing your space to fit your family’s needs? We’ve got your back! Below, we’re tackling our favorite closet organizational systems so that even the busiest family can experience ease.

Kids’ Mudroom Drawer

We love using a mudroom drawer for kids’ storage because it’s a reachable place for them to unload when they come in the door. STAK bins are ideal organizers for all things kid-related because the adjustable dividers allow you to customize your bins to create separation between categories. Also, their depth allows you to really maximize deep drawers without wasting space and adjust as they grow.

Too Big/Too Small Bin

One of our favorite tips for parents is to have a bin in their kid’s closet ready to toss items that are “too small” and a bin for “too big” items for your child to grow into. If you are, or might plan for more kids in the future, clothes that are in good condition from the “Too Small” bin can go into a “Future Baby” bin in a storage area like a basement, garage, or storage closet. If not, all “too small” items can go directly to donation once the bin is full. Perfect this system by having a “Too Big” bin with clothing that is the next size up to keep a nice flow as your kiddos grow!

Over-the-Door Storage

Over the door storage is ideal for creating easy access for kids to their toys, art supplies, and even accessories. The back of door space is often unused and can hold lots of vertical storage with the right system. We love using the Elfa system because it is incredibly flexible, offering options like bins, pegboards, hooks, and more! If you’re looking for easy and accessible shoe storage for kids and adults alike, try using this over-the-door shoe organizer!

Cube Cubby System

The cube cubby system is great for adding storage to the floor of your kids’ closet. It is ideal for corralling a bunch of toys so they aren’t all over the house, but can be easily tucked into cube bins. This is a wonderful way to teach your toddler to learn how to clean up after themselves and build independent play with access to their toys. Cubes come in a variety of colors and finishes, including clear, pink, blue, woven, fabric, and even fun animal cubes!

Memento Storage

Creating a system for how you handle mementos is super important when you have a growing family. Things get out of hand quickly with daily incoming art projects, so establishing a place for these items to live will save you many a headache. We typically recommend placing a storage bin in an easily accessible place where you can tuck all incoming mementos. Once the bin is full, it’s important to go through and honestly decide what is most important to keep. Everything can feel precious when it comes to your kids, so try to keep your logical hat on while going through. Remember: the more items you keep, the less likely you’ll be in years to come to actually see the mementos that bring you the most joy. More items = more clutter. Select your favorites and tuck in a memento bin in their closet or in a storage area. We also love using these frames with storage to display your kids’ art, which helps them build confidence while allowing you to flexibly interchange artworks as they come in.
