As February approaches and the first month of the new year comes to an end, our next #HorderlyHabit is all about decluttering and donating! Donating goods is super easy and isn’t as daunting as it sometimes seems to be.
Editing & Decluttering
A super important part of Horderly’s professional organizing process is to encourage clients to donate items they no longer love. Our Horderly family knows we talk about “editing” – A LOT. Editing is the process of going through your items and deciding what to keep, toss or donate.
Throughout the editing process, it’s important to ask yourself the right questions to help make your decision easy. You’ll hear our team ask you questions like “when’s the last time you used this item” or “would you buy it today” – our main goal at Horderly is to help create a functional space for you with the essential items you love and cherish.
Once you’ve edited your items and have decided what to donate, the next and final step is to bag your items up, get in your car and drop them off at your nearest Goodwill donation center.
Locating a Goodwill Near You
Many people let donations pile up because they don’t think there’s a donation center close by and we want to ensure those donations get out asap.
There are over 3,200 Goodwill retail stores nationwide and there’s most likely one near your house!
Once you locate your local Goodwill donation center, simply follow the signs directing you to the donation drop off area. A friendly donation attendant will help you unload your items and give you a receipt for tax purposes.
The Donation Process
At Horderly, our clients are always asking what happens to their donated items once it leaves the house and makes its way to Goodwill.
Once Goodwill receives your donated items, donations are sold at local stores. Sales from donations fund Goodwill’s programs to provide employment training and opportunities in local communities. Revenue allows Goodwill programs help people find employment opportunities to build skills and find work outside of our stores so they can live an independent life.
The Goodwill Mission
Goodwill focuses on employment programs that help people with barriers to the job market such as physical and mental disabilities, people who are underemployed or can’t find work at all. Goodwill is their partner toward employment empowerment and independence.
Last year, Goodwill NYNJ helped almost 30,000 residents of New York and New Jersey by providing job training, coaching and employment services, including nearly 9,000 individuals with disabilities.
Goodwill NYNJ diverted 38 million pounds of pre-loved clothing and goods from the landfill to be recycled, refashioned and re-loved.
With the help of Goodwill NYNJ, 2,351 people secure a New York or New Jersey-based job outside of our stores including 843 individuals with disabilities.
